The right questions are far more important than the right answers.
Asking, “why” or “what” more often keeps you in the problem solving part of the brain, the forward thinking area. When in curiosity mode, teams perform better because there is more open sharing of communication with less group conflict*.
Listening, inquiring further, and doing it even more when you as the leader don’t know, is powerful! It builds trust in your team, it models curiosity and problem solving, and makes a path for innovative thinking.
Coaches and innovative leaders tend to function from a place of curiosity – the place of “not knowing.” I have found this to be a very powerful place to work from in regard to helping clients solve problems. Asking questions from a place of not knowing causes you to be more exploratory and in turn, the person responding is too. Unfortunately, many teams feel apprehensive to be inquisitive for fear of being reprimanded because the leader feels threatened.
Leadership Tips To Get More From Your Team:
- Don’t settle for the first answer – ask, “why?” and explore further
- Focus on learning goals vs. performance based goals (EX: what can you learn about selling more ___________? vs. You must sell 10 units by Friday)
- Don’t immediately reject an idea, find the good piece and facilitate construction from that good piece
- Have “how can we __________?” days. Post ideas on a common wall and pose further curiosities with the results.
